Practice Test One

Answer Explanations

1. The correct answer is (C). It will be important for the new principal to establish an effective relationship with the parents, students, and teachers in the plan and seek some commitment from these stakeholders, in the development of a shared vision, with goals and objectives before any plan is developed.—Standard 4.f

2. The correct answer is (B). All stakeholders must have their opinions heard and have a part in how their school might meet this part of the district vision.—Standard 1.a

3. The answer is (D). The teacher’s behavior was unprofessional and went against the vision of the district. The teachers are either incapable or indolent in their classrooms.—Standard 1.c

4. The answer is (A). It will take leadership to support the vision of the school as well as a total community and staff buy-in to find academic success. To look for possible support at the same time staying focused on the positive will create an atmosphere for change.—Standard 1.g

5. The correct answer is (C). Requesting more to hire subs is only a temporary solution, as this collaboration should be sustained for the long term not for just one year. Asking teachers to stay after school for one hour is sometimes a breach of contract especially if the contract does not specify that the teachers are required to be in the school for an extra hour, not only that most teachers have grading and lesson planning to complete after school. This would only add to their heavy workload. The best answer is C as it allows for the principal to work with all those affected by the school schedule to come up with the same time to meet and have the specials classes.—Standard 1.d

6. The correct answer is (C). Sending a letter out and requesting they all reply, with those who have a passion for this task meeting to work on it, opens the field for everyone to have a part, for some to take more leadership with him, and others to opt out if they so choose. It also sets the tone for relationships with the staff that you are open to them but understanding that their time is important, and it provides an added opportunity for those who are more driven to lead in this area.—Standard 1.c

7. The correct answer is (D). When talking to personnel about behavioral issues, it should always be done individually even though the same talk applies to many. You have to lead. It is often difficult to do the right thing. People may not like you, but that is not the issue. You have to stop unethical behaviors in your school.
